Injury Prevention Is a Public Health Priority in Hawaii

The Hawaii State Department of Health periodically issues a plan for injury prevention. The last such plan was to cover 2012 to 2017. The issue is critical since statistics show that unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among Hawaii residents ages one to 44. During an average week, 13 residents die from an injury, while 115 are hospitalized and 1,530 are treated in emergency departments. It is no wonder the Department of Health sees accident prevention as a public health priority.

According to the Hawaii Injury Prevention Plan (HIPP), the leading causes of death from injuries for Hawaii residents are:

  1. Suicide
  2. Falls
  3. Poisoning
  4. Car occupant accident
  5. Drowning
  6. Suffocation
  7. Motorcycle accident
  8. Pedestrian traffic accident
  9. Assault
  10. Fire

The HIPP is an attempt to coordinate injury prevention activities with organizations, agencies and community groups. The Department of Health has declared as its mission creating “a safe Hawaii from the mountains to the sea.”
